Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest travel stretches of the year in Central Ohio. Whether you are heading east on I-70 toward family in Zanesville, north on I-71 toward Cleveland, or south on I-71 toward Cincinnati, your tires are the only thing between your car and a cold, wet highway. The good news: you do not have to burn a weekday afternoon at a tire shop to get ready. If your tires are worn, Elite Mobile Tire can install a new set in your driveway or work parking lot before you pack the car.
Why a Holiday Road Trip Is Hard on Worn Tires
Around-town driving hides a lot of tire problems. A long highway run at sustained speed, with a fully loaded car, in late-November weather, does not. Heat builds up in underinflated tires, worn tread struggles to clear water and slush, and a small sidewall bulge that never caused trouble on short trips can fail at 70 mph. Cold mornings also drop tire pressure, so a tire that looked fine in October may be running low by Thanksgiving.
A Quick Pre-Trip Tire Check
Give yourself a few minutes about a week before you leave so there is still time to replace tires if you need to:
- Tread depth: Use the penny test or a tread gauge. Many manufacturers and safety groups recommend replacing tires at 2/32" at the latest, and wet and snowy roads are noticeably safer with more tread than that.
- Pressure: Check all four tires cold, before driving, against the sticker on the driver’s door jamb, not the number on the sidewall. Add a little extra attention if the TPMS light has come on during a cold morning.
- Sidewalls: Look for bulges, cracks, or cuts. Any bulge means the tire should be replaced, not driven on a long trip.
- Age: Find the four-digit date code on the sidewall. Older tires can harden and crack even when the tread looks okay.
- Uneven wear: If one tire is much more worn than the others, check the rest closely. It is usually a sign the whole set is due.
The NHTSA tire safety page has more detail on tread, pressure, and load ratings if you want to dig deeper.
Replace the Set Before the Trip, Not on the Shoulder
If the check turns up worn tires, the smartest move is to replace them as a set (or at least as matched pairs on the same axle) before you leave. Matched tires grip, brake, and wear evenly, and all-wheel-drive vehicles often need all four tires closely matched to protect the drivetrain. When only two are replaced, many manufacturers recommend putting the newer pair on the rear axle for stability in wet conditions.
Waiting until a tire fails on I-71 or I-70 turns a planned purchase into an emergency, usually on the busiest travel day of the year. A scheduled install the week before is calmer, cheaper in lost time, and lets you choose the tires you actually want.
Getting New Tires Installed Where You Already Are
Elite Mobile Tire brings the tires, the mounting equipment, and the balancer to you. A few examples of how that works around town:
- Reynoldsburg: If your trip starts on I-70 East, we can install a new set in your driveway before work so you are ready to roll on Wednesday.
- Worthington: Heading north on I-71 or around I-270? Book an install at your home or office and keep your workday intact.
- Urbancrest: For drivers near the I-270 and I-71 South corridor, we can meet you at home or at your warehouse or job site parking lot.
We serve the whole Columbus area, including the Rickenbacker and Route 317 corridor. Tires are mounted and balanced on site, and mobile tire balancing is around $50 per tire. Note that we do not perform wheel alignments, so if your car pulls to one side, have that checked at an alignment shop before your trip.
Plan Around Our Hours
Elite Mobile Tire is open Monday through Thursday from 7am to 1am and Friday from 7am to 3pm, and we are closed Saturday and Sunday. For Thanksgiving week, book early in the week so your new tires are on well before you leave. Before you go, it is also worth checking road and weather conditions on OHGO from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
